Our Backyard Homes is a 501(c)3 organization serving the youth of LA's homeless community with micro-housing options near their places of livelihood.
Our signature program is our student scholarship housing program, giving housing-insecure college students a year-long stay in our micro-homes free of charge. Courtesy of land-easement partnerships with local residents and funding sources to build our homes, our program brings communities together to solve the critical issue of homelessness in our backyards--with land literally in our backyards.
This is uncharted territory in the world of homeless housing and so is our organization! We're a collection of passionate volunteers pursuing change in the way city residents view living spaces, eager to make change in the longterm landscape of urban affordable housing.
We are promoting our housing solution in the most unusual of ways--our Tiny (Toilet) Home Project. By converting a wheelchair-accessible porta potty into a living space and touring it around LA neighborhoods, our aim is to show that some innovations are more desirable than they appear on the surface. We'll move from one property to the next, living in different neighborhoods while challenging social stigmas, practical misconceptions, and legislative gray areas regarding urban, small-space dwelling. There's a housing crisis in our own backyards, and if we can make a liveable home out of a porta-potty, we can convince Angelenos that the solution to that crisis is right here in our own backyards.
Our Backyard Homes: Tiny homes. Big solutions.
